About

2014 has been declared The Year of The Male by the male suicide prevention charity CALM and I am honoured to be a member of the steering group for this great initiative.

One of the ways I'll be celebrating all 365 days of The Year of The Male is by keeping a diary about "My Year As A Man".

For those who don't know me, I am---according to Ava Vidal at The Telegraph---a "self-proclaimed expert on men's issues"---and yes I suppose I am a bit of expert in this area (even if do proclaim it myself).

About a decade ago, I was the PR Director for Fathers 4 Justice---a role that made me the first person to ever tell the media that a father had scaled a building dressed as a Superhero.

In the intervening years my life path has taken many different turns and I've helped to set up various projects supporting men and boys on the way. I now run a consultancy called Helping Men; have hosted the National Conference for Men and Boys since 2011 and have helped co-ordinate International Men's Day in the UK since 2010.

I write occasional articles about men and boys for The Guardian, the New Statesman, the Daily Telegraph and the Good Men Project.  In 2013 I wrote my first book about men and boys called Equality For Men which I'd encourage you to buy (then I am biased).

I like to talk about men's issues whenever I get the chance---if you want a glimpse of me in action then I am happy to point you towards my LSE TEDx talk and my talk at the 2013 Australian Men's Health Gathering.

My perspectives on men's issues tend to fall into four distinct camps: the personal, the political, the practical and the theoretical. This blog is mostly a space for my reflections on the personal experience of being a man. To get sense of my other approaches see the blogs listed below:
